Life in the UK Test- guidance

27 April 2010

Many applicant applying for settlement in the UK, also known as Indefinite Leave to Remain, in their own rights or as a family members of a British Citizen or someone present and settled will be required to show sufficient knowledge of the English language and sufficient knowledge about life in the UK.  The only exceptions are applicant below the age of 18 and above the age of 65 or for medical reasons. Applicants whose ability in English is at or above ESOL Entry Level 3 will have to take and pass the Life in the UK test.

This test is based on information found in the handbook “Life in the UK: A Journey to Citizenship”.  Applicants with ability in English below ESOL Entry Level 3, however, will need to take combined English language and citizenship classes.

The “Life in the UK: A Journey to Citizenship” handbook is available at the price of £9.99 at the Stationery Office or from most bookshops across the UK. Information on how to book a test date and on the test itself can be found at the website: www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk.
