Tier 1 applicants should be in skilled jobs, says Immigration Minister

29 October 2010

During the week commencing 25 October 2010, the UK Border Agency expects to be considering applications that were received on or before 30 September 2010. This timescale is only a guideline, and some cases may take longer to consider.

The UK Border Agency has also published a study which looks at the jobs being done by migrants who are in the UK under Tier 1 of the points-based system. Immigration Minister Damian Green said: 'While it is important that low-skilled jobs are filled, there are hundreds of thousands of British people who could be doing them instead of a migrant. Those coming into the UK under the highly skilled migrant route should only be able to do highly skilled jobs - it should not be used as a means to enter the low-skilled jobs market. Investors and entrepreneurs aside, this report questions the value of this route into the UK, and the findings will play a key part in discussions on how the annual limit will be shaped.'

Could this be the basis for future changes to the Points Based Scheme such as  the introduction of  certain restrictions on the type of jobs to be carried out by prospective applicants? At the moment, the only work restriction is the inability to be employed as a doctor or dentist in training, however the concern is that this might be amended to include low skilled jobs.
