Increase in immigration fees and recent updates

19 November 2010

Following Parliamentary approval, on Monday 22 November the UK Border Agency will introduce new application fees for migrants applying to come to or extend their stay in the UK for work, study or other reasons.

It is likely that the UK Border Agency will also publish new forms to reflect the increase in the fees.

We also wish to remind in country applicants that subject to parliamentary approval of the regulations, migrants who apply in the UK under Tier 1 or Tier 5 (Temporary worker) of the points-based system will need to enrol their biometric information (fingerprints and photograph) as part of their application from 14 December 2010.

On 18 November 2010, the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) published its report into an annual limit on immigration through Tiers 1 and 2 of the points-based system. The Committee has concluded that, in order to reduce net migration, the new prospective caps on applications for entry clearance under the Tier 1 General and Tier 2 categories of the points based system must ensure that between 37,400 and 43,700 visas are issued in 2011.

The government will consider the report's findings alongside the responses to the UK Border Agency's own consultations on the annual limit. Both will inform the government's decision on how the limit will operate when it is introduced next year.
