Pre-entry screening for Tuberculosis - update!

31 May 2012

In May 2012, the UK Border Agency announced a change in the requirement of tuberculosis (TB) screening for visa applicants. The change means more visa applicants seeking to stay in the country longer than six months are required to complete a TB screening test before they are granted a visa for the UK.

According to Immigration Minister, Damian Green, the expansion of the pre-entry screening programme was to serve the public interest by protecting lives from the infectious disease and saving taxpayers more than 40 million pounds over the next ten years.  In the ministerial statement, it indicated that one third of the world population was effected by TB disease of which the potential threat was at its highest in the UK for 30 years. Thus, after a recent research revealed over 9,000 new TB cases were identified in the UK in 2011, and three quarters of the group were non-UK born people, the government decided to tackle the disease by widening the reach of its pre-entry screening pilot programme.

Through a gradual roll-out, another 52 countries will be included in the pre-entry screening pilot programme by 2013, in addition to the 15 countries that are already in the list. The new additions to the programme include China, India, Nigeria and Russia.
