Changes to the Tier 4 category

Oct 1, 2009

The UK Border Agency has introduced changes to the policy for Tier 4 category under the Points Based Scheme.

The new policy focuses on extending the maintenance concession for Tier 4 applicants who are already in the United Kingdom and tying Tier 4 Students' permission to stay in the UK to their sponsors.

As part of the requirements under the Tier 4 applicants have to show enough money to cover their course fees and maintenance. Until now students were only required to show available funds on the date when the application was made, however this concession ends on 1 October 2009. As of this month applicants applying from outside of the UK will have to show that they have held this money for a 28-day period ending no more than one month before their application.

For those already in the UK the maintenance concession will be extended.

From 5 October 2009, new Tier 4 Students' permission to stay in the United Kingdom will be 'tied' to the education provider that is sponsoring them. Sponsor's reference number will be visible on the vignette on student’s passport or on their identity card.

Students who wish to study with a new Tier 4 sponsor will have to apply for a new Tier 4 Students visa. Applicants will be required to wait until a decision on their application is made before commencing studies with the new provider. Those who breach the above condition will be committing a criminal offence for which they could be prosecuted or removed from the country.
