Identity Cards for Tier 2/Work Permit holders
Dec 10, 2009
Following Parliament’s approval from 6 January 2010, skilled foreign workers applying under Tier 2 Sponsored Skilled Workers category of the points-based system (PBS) will be issued with identity cards.
When applying to renew or switch to a Tier 2/ Work Permit visa foreign nationals from outside the European Economic Area and their dependants will be required to enroll their biometric information (photograph and fingerprints) and will be issued with an identity card confirming their identity and the right to live and work in the UK.
Since the introduction of the identity cards in November 2008, 90,000 cards have been issued, mainly to students renewing their visa under Tier 4 Students of the points-based system and those renewing marriage visas.
Foreign nationals who are being issued with identity cards are given the choice of providing their biometrics at 11 Home Office biometric enrolment centres around the UK or at one of the 17 participating Crown post offices (for a fee of £8). The partnership with the Post Office will provide extra capacity enabling the UK Border Agency to speed up the enrolment process and give more choice and convenience to migrants who wish to enrol.
The introduction of the identity cards for those in Tier 1 Highly Skilled Workers and Tier 5 Temporary Workers categories of the points-based system will also be brought forward, from 2011 to 2010.
