The UK Border Agency has recently published a Statement of Changes in the Immigration Rules. The amendments will be effective from the 1st January 2010 with the exception of the changes to the Tier 4 Scheme which will come into force on 22 February 2010.
Some of the most significant changes will include:
- Same day processing (PEO appointments) will no longer be available for those applying for leave to remain or settlement on the basis of Long Residence;
- Child visitor rules will be amended to allow overseas students to come to the UK for exchange visits to state maintained and other schools;
- Tier 4 migrants will require an electronic confirmation of acceptance for studies in order to be able to score points for attributes in their applications to come to the UK;
- In-country switching into the Tier 5 Temporary Workers category will be permitted for those workers who were admitted under the previous rules for overseas government employees.
The Statement of Changes will be incorporated into a consolidated version of the Immigration Rules.
