Important changes to the Tier 4 Student visa category

03 March 2010

From 3 March 2010 a new set of measures is being introduced to the  category. These changes are meant to tighten the criteria on student visas and limit the number of migrants coming to the UK under the category.

In particular, we wish to point out the following changes:

· The minimum level of English language course has been raised to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students will therefore need a higher level of English at a minimum level of B1 to come and study an English language course in the UK.

· Those coming to study below degree level (excluding foundation degree) will only be able to work 10 hours a week (this has been reduced from 20 hours).

· Those studying for a course under for less than 6 months, will no longer be able to bring their dependants.

· Dependants of anyone studying a course lower than degree level (excluding those on foundation degree courses) will be able to work only if they qualify in their own right.

Those who submitted and paid for their applications prior to 3 March 2010 will not be affected by the new rule changes.
However, it has been confirmed that further changes are likely to be introduced in April 2010.
