Fiancé/e or Proposed Civil Partner

The Fiancé/e or Proposed Civil Partner visa category allows people to come to the UK in order to marry or enter into a civil partnership.

Before travelling to the United Kingdom the fiancé/e or proposed civil partner must apply for an entry clearance. This type of visa is issued for a six month period. Employment during this time is not permitted.

To be eligible for a UK fiancé/e or proposed civil partner visa, applicants must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Be aged 21 or over
  • Plan to marry within a reasonable time (usually six months)
  • Have met each other
  • Be able to support and accommodate themselves without recourse to public funds.

After the marriage or civil ceremony takes place, you can apply for Leave to Remain as a spouse or civil partner. If your application is approved, you will be given permission to live and work  in the United Kingdom for 27 months. Upon completion of two years of residence in the UK, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

Certificate of Approval

If you plan to get married or register your civil partnership and you are already in the United Kingdom in a different visa category, you may need to apply for a certificate of approval. This document will allow you to give notice at a registry office in order to marry or form a civil partnership.

If you wish to remain in the UK under one of the above categories please contact us to discuss your options and how we can assist you in your application.
