Scale-up scheme: what to expect?

The UK Government is planning to introduce a new immigration visa category in spring 2022, which is currently known as the “Scale-up visa”.

In order to meet the requirement of the Scale-up scheme, migrants will need to receive a ‘highly skill’ job offer from a UK eligible business, with a minimum gross salary in the amount of £33,000 and will also need to satisfy the English language proficiency requirement set at B1.

The sponsoring business must demonstrate that it is a high growth business by meeting the following criteria:

  • An annual average revenue or employment growth rate over a 3-year period greater than 20%; and
  • A minimum of 10 employees at the start of this three-year period.

The Scale-up visa might be preferable to the Skilled Worker route as it is likely that the sponsoring company will not need to apply for a licence and thus, have to comply with the associated responsibility & duties.

In addition, the Scale-up visa will also allow migrants to easily change jobs/employers, and is expected to permit individuals to potentially qualify for settlement in the UK in three years.
