IELTS Indicator explained

On 22 April 2020, IELTS Partners launched a new online test to support students impacted by Covid-19 restrictions. This online system applies to those who wish to apply for a Tier 4 General student visa. Universities and educational institutions can use IELTS Indicator for application purposes too.

The IELTS Indicator is an online English language test for students who are not able to attend an IELTS test centre due to the Covid-19 related restrictions.

As with the IELTS exam, the IELTS Indicator will also assess a student’s English language skill in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Candidates will be able to complete the online test from their home without attending a centre.

To ensure that the test focuses on real-life conversation skills, students will conduct their speaking test face to face with a trained IELTS Examiner via video call.

However, migrants who wish to apply for other types of UK visas, for example, spouse visa, Tier 2 General visa, Innovator visa and Sole Representative visa etc, are still required to take IELTS exam for the UKVI purpose.

To be noted that those migrants, who wish to apply for further leave to remain in the UK, for instance under Appendix FM, or as part of a Tier 2 General visa extension/ change of employment application, can use their previous English language test result to meet the requirement if at the right level such as A2 for a spouse’s extension, as long as the latter was relied upon in the initial application.
