Immigration health surcharge effective no earlier than 31.01.2024

On 13 October 2023, the UK government announced a significant increase in the Immigration Health Surcharge fees (IHS). This was followed by the publication of the draft Immigration (Health Charge) (Amendment) Order 2023, which specified that the earliest effective date would be 16 January 2024.

As a result, the IHS for adults will rise to £1035 per year from £624, and the child’s IHS is set to increase to £776 per year, replacing the current £470 per year. The lower rate will also apply to for students, student dependants, those applying for entry clearance or leave to remain under the Youth Mobility Scheme.

However, the effective date now has been delayed due to a debate in the House of Commons on 10 January 2024, as outlined in Article 2 of the order:

(2) This Order comes into force on the later of 16th January 2024 or the twenty-first day after the day on which it is made.

Therefore, the increase will now be effective no earlier than 31 January 2024.
