New Life in the UK test

A new version of Life in the UK test has been announced and will be implemented to tests booked on or after 25th March 2013. According to the Home Office, the new test aims to “focus on values and principles at the heart of being British” and ensure migrants are equipped with the knowledge to properly integrate into the society by putting more emphasises on the nation’s culture and history.

The Life in the UK test was introduced in 2005, and it is taken by foreign nationals who wish to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK or British nationality. The test lasts 45 minutes and can be taken at one of 90 centres around the UK. The new handbook for the modified test is on sale from Monday, 28 January and should be used for test takers who have their tests scheduled on or after 25th March 2013.

The Immigration minister Mark Harper said: “We’ve stripped out mundane information about water meters, how to find train timetables, and using the internet.” “The new book (test) rightly focuses on values and principles at the heart of being British. Instead of telling people how to claim benefits it encourages participation in British life.”

The statistics shows that more than 150,000 Life in the UK tests were taking nationally in 2012 of which 77,000 tests were delivered in London.
