The best of the best!

The new ‘Global Talent visa’ will replace the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa as of 20 February 2020.

This category is aimed at ‘talented and promising’ individuals who wish to work in the UK in the following fields:

  • Science
  • Engineering
  • Medicine
  • Humanities
  • Digital technology
  • Arts and Culture (including film and television, fashion design and architecture)

The applicants should be considered ‘leaders’ in their field or have the potential to be leaders, as determined by an endorsing body. The endorsing body must be satisfied that the applicant’s presence in the UK will contribute to the advancement of their sector.

Applications for endorsement are made to the Home Office first, however they are in fact considered by the endorsing body. The endorsing body will advise the Home Office as to whether or not it endorses the applicant.

If successful, the decisionmaker will provide the applicant with an endorsement letter. The applicant will then have 3 months from the date on the letter to make a valid application for a Global Talent visa.

The endorsement criteria varies, depending in which field you wish to work in. For further guidance on this, please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange a consultation.

The Global Talent visa gives flexibility in terms of the length of stay, applicants can choose between 1-5 years. This can be renewed as often as they wish, since there is no limit on the period that can be spent working in the UK (provided that they continue to be endorsed.)

When applying for an extension or settlement, an applicant will need to show that they have earned money whilst in the UK (in the relevant field of endorsement) and that their endorsement has not been withdrawn.

The time in which an applicant can apply for settlement varies, those working in the field of science, engineering, humanities and medicine will be eligible to apply after 3 years. The qualifying period to apply for settlement under “promise” criteria for digital technology and arts and culture applicants will remain as 5 years (as was previously required under Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent).

Another bonus, is that unlike most visa categories there is no English language or maintenance requirement to be met.
