UK Immigration: ID Check App explained

Individuals might be able to use a ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ App to verify their identity once they start their online application form. The App will check whether their identity document is genuine and verify that the document belongs to them.

Which ID can you use for the UK Immigration: ID Check App?

Migrants will be able to use their biometric passport from an EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, or a biometric British national (overseas) (BNO), Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) or EEA passport if they are applying for the BNO visa, or their BRP if their application route allows.

Please note that individuals who are applying to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS), must use the ‘EU Exit: ID Document Check’ App instead: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/using-the-eu-exit-id-document-check-app.

Using the App on your phone

Android users can download the App from the following website:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.gov.HomeOffice.ho2&hl=en_GB&gl=US

For iphone users, they can download the App from:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/uk-immigration-id-check/id1499891460

Please note that applicants must start an application form and create a UK Visas and Immigration account online at GOV.UK before using the App.

Scanning documents

Individuals will need to take a picture of the bio page of their passport using their phone.

If the applicant is using a BRP card, he/she will need to take a picture of the back of the card and then will be asked to take a picture of the front of the BRP card.

What if the app cannot read the chip in your passport?

If the App cannot read the chip in your passport, for example, if you have a HKSAR passport with a number starting with ‘K’, it might be harder to read the chip. In this case, the migrant can restart the ‘confirm identity’ task on the application dashboard and use another BNO or EEA passport with a biometric chip. Alternatively, he/she can book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) or a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) service point.

Scan your face

Individuals can scan their face by using their phone’s camera or skip this step and provide different evidence to prove their identity. Please note that if the applicant is 10 years old or younger, he/she will not be asked to scan their face.

In addition, when you are taking a photo of yourself, please ensure that you do not have hair covering your face or eyes, do not wear a head covering (unless it is for religious or medical reasons), and do not have any shadows, objects or people behind you.

Completing your application

Individuals can complete the rest of the application once their identity has been confirmed by using any mobile phone, tablet, laptop or computer.

Applicants can travel to the UK using their digital immigration status if their application is successful.
