This has caused problems for a range of industries, such as supermarkets, fast food chains and fuel industry. In recent days, lack of fuel deliveries leading to panic buying and lengthy queues at some petrol stations.<\/p>\n
On 25 September 2021, the government announced that the Temporary Worker route would open for 5000 HGV drivers and 5500 poultry workers from October 2021 until 24 December 2021 to ease risk of shortages.<\/p>\n
In addition, the government is planning to train 4000 people to become HGV drivers. Moreover, the government will send nearly 1 million letters to all drivers who currently hold a valid HGV driving licence, encouraging them back into the industry. MOD examiners will also help DVSA examiners to cope with the increase HGV testing capacity over the next 12 weeks.<\/p>\n
However, the government wishes employers to make long term investments in the UK domestic workforce rather than relying on overseas labour in order to move to a high wage and high skilled economy.<\/p>\n
